Foster + Partners have completed two modular headquarters for Moroccan bank BMCE in Rabat and Casablanca, Morocco. 

The design comprises a concrete frame enclosed by glazed panels, covered by screens made of cut and curved sheet steel.
The double-height entrance hall of each building features a bank of seating connected to the domed roof by a swooping ribbon of concrete.
Offices and meeting rooms are arranged on two floors in the remainder of the building.
Each branch is organized on a modular grid, to be repeated and adapted according to location.

Foster + Partners completes first project in Africa with BMCE branches in Morocco
The first regional headquarters branches for Moroccan bank, BMCE (Banque Marocaine du Commerce Exterieur) have opened in Rabat and Casablanca, with a further branch in Fez due to complete shortly – they are the first buildings by Foster + Partners to be completed in Africa.
The banks’ contemporary interior is wrapped by a traditional, energy efficient envelope and their design is based on a modular system, which utilises local materials and craftsmanship to create a striking new emblem for BMCE.
The design follows a ‘kit-of-parts’ approach, with variations in colour and scale according to the bank’s location. Each building comprises a concrete frame, with an entrance colonnade and a series of bays repeated on a modular grid.
The bays are enclosed by glazed panels and 200mm-deep screens, which provide shade and security.
The screens are cut from sheets of stainless steel – a special low-iron mixture that does not heat up in the sun – which are curved to create a geometric design, based on traditional Islamic patterns.
The branches are designed to be highly energy efficient and use locally-sourced materials, such as black granite and grey limestone.
All BMCE flagship branches feature an ‘earth tube’, an electricity-free cooling system: fresh air is drawn into an empty pipe that encircles the building underground, where it is naturally cooled by the earth and released into the branch.
The dome, a recurrent element in each bank, is a reference to the design of a number of new schools in Morocco, which have received philanthropic support from BMCE Bank Foundation.
The interior of the dome is rendered in tadelakt, a local plaster technique, while the exterior is clad in zellige, traditional ceramic tiles.
The dome form sweeps down into the banking hall to create a sculptural curved bench.

Turning Torso

Design Method
“Turning Torso is a mixed use residential tower in Malmo’s Western Harbor that serves as a symbol of the revitalization of an important urban area from a decaying industrial zone into a thriving seaside neighborhood. Based on the Turning Torso sculpture executed years prior, the building is composed of nine cube units with triangular tips. Each unit houses five floors, serving as a “sub-building.” At a height of 190 meters, that is a whopping (623 feet) for you none metric folk out there with 54 stories. Turning Torso is the tallest residential building in Sweden and the second tallest residential building in Europe.  

The tower's design is based on a sculpture by Calatrava called Twisting Torso, which is a white marble piece based on the form of a twisting human being.
The entire building turns 90° as it climbs upwards over nine blocks or cubes, each of which consists of five floors.  The topmost segment is twisted ninety degrees clockwise with respect to the ground floor. Each floor consists of an irregular pentagonal shape rotating around the vertical core, which is supported by an exterior steel framework. The two bottom segments are intended as office space. Segments three to nine house 147 luxury apartments. There is also one floor between all the cubes - these floors are used for different purposes (rooms with a view, conferences areas or activity/gym room).
The entire building is handicapped accessible and features a highly advanced environmental design. Moreover, the engineering has allowed for an extraordinarily efficient method of construction. After the sub-basement was erected as a conventional concrete work, the vertical circulation nucleus and slabs were put up using a sliding framework system. The exterior steel structure was then attached, using elements that were prefabricated in the shop. Finally, cranes pulled up the in-shop, prefabricated facade. In this way, although the design is highly innovative, construction time was substantially reduced.”
Construction Method
“The Swedish construction company, NCC Construction AB in Malmö, commissioned the Weissenhorn-based formwork and scaffolding manufacturer, PERI, to develop a cost-effective formwork concept and deliver the required systems for the project. PERI engineers designed the formwork to handle heights of 4.00 m 13'-0" 
which meant all floor heights - 3.18 m (almost 10'-0") standard areas up to a maximum 3.89 m (over 12'-0") - have been completed without the need of time-consuming height adjustment. The ACS-P (P = platform) self-climbing scaffold concept allowed concreting of the ring wall on the main level and the retightening of the internal core walls one floor below. The ACS-P weighs over 110 tons and is anchored on twelve fixing points. A concrete placing boom has been installed on its own climbing scaffold using four fixing points in the core.”

The self-climbing scaffolds are interlocked and are climbed together. A special control unit, which monitors this procedure, prevents the scaffold units from colliding.

All formwork elements are suspended on a distribution frame via a crane crab. Slabs and walls are cast in one pour. Through the use of PERI Uni-portal slab tables for two standard floors and one intermediate arched floor, pre-determined concrete cycles can easily be maintained.

Construction crews need nine days to complete a standard floor which means work is progressing exactly according to plan. The contractors are very satisfied with the formwork technology from Weissenhorn as site manager, Jörgen Holm, commented: "We received the best solution from PERI. All work could be carried out on safe and spacious levels. Shuttering and striking as well as climbing functioned extremely well."

Chicken Point Cabin

For today's building of the week or your environment of the week...
I'd like to share with you this one small project called Chicken Point Cabin Olson Kundig Architects.
Its located in Northern Idaho and completed in 2002. 

"The idea for the cabin is that of a lakeside shelter in the woods—a little box with a big window that opens to the surrounding landscape. The cabin’s big window-wall (30 feet by 20 feet) opens the entire living space to the forest and lake. Materials are low maintenance—concrete block, steel, concrete floors and plywood—in keeping with the notion of a cabin, and left unfinished to naturally age and acquire a patina that fits in with the natural setting. The cabin sleeps ten.

The use of color and texture are important in the interior of this casual family cabin. Strong blocks of color help to define space and direct the eye. Texture in furnishings provides a soft but strong counterpoint to the hard, raw material palette. Custom tables using plywood and polyurethane create a direct connection to the architecture while providing durability and function. Some of the unique interior features include the custom continuous steel pipe fireplace, the wood slab work surface supported by a truck suspension spring, and the custom stainless steel bathroom sink."

I would recommend browsing their whole site. They do have a lot of fun and interesting projects :)

Overall, the minimal use of materials, execution of details, and composition makes this project enjoyable for today's YEOW!
